Matthews Specialty Vehicles builds bookmobiles for public, county, and school library systems all around the world. We offer the largest selection of platforms to enable you to choose the perfect vehicle to fit your program. Models can be equipped with built-in satellite communications technology which allows patrons to access the Internet and library staff to link up in real time to their computerized catalog.

We offer SIX basic series that can be customized to your specifications.

Series 500

The Matthews Specialty Vehicles Series 500 Bookhauler is built on a Freightliner Sprinter Van. It is available in lengths of 16 to 21 feet.  The Sprinter Van has the innovative Mercedes-Benz CDI Diesel engine. It has a capacity of 500 to 1,500 volumes. 

Series 1000

The Matthews Series 1000 model is available with an interior load space of 12 to 30 feet and the available width is 96” to 102”. Book capacity is approximately 1,500 to 2,800 volumes.   This model comes with a gas or diesel engine and is equipped with an aluminum body.  Shelving will be aluminum, oak or maple depending upon final GVWR.  This model is now available on the Ford or Chevy chassis.

Series 2000

The Matthews Series 2000 Stepvan style is available in lengths from 18’ to 36’.  Book capacity is approximately 1,500 to 3,500 volumes.  It is available on the Freightliner strip chassis with a variety of different body manufacturers.

Series 4000

The Matthews Series 4000 model is a front engine transit style vehicle equipped with a Caterpillar diesel engine.  Available horsepower ranges from 207 to 250 HP.  The Series 4000 model is available in lengths from 27’ to 40’ and is now available with a 102”W body.  To accommodate all, this vehicle also may be equipped with a headroom option of 78” to 86”.  Thomas Built Buses manufacture both the body and the chassis.  Book capacity is approximately 2,500 to 6,000 depending on component option and size. 

Series 5000

The Matthews Series 5000 model is our most heavy-duty bookmobile.  This bookmobile is a heavy-duty rear engine. Thomas Built Buses manufacture the chassis and the body. The Series 5000 ranges from 32’ to 40’ also with the headroom option of 78” and 86”.  Available engines are Caterpillar and Mercedes-Benz. 

Series 6000

The Matthews Specialty Vehicle Series 6000 Trailer is available in a variety of lengths from 16’ to 40’ with an available headroom of 84”.
